Simon taps Ann Kaner-Roth as Deputy Secretary of State
and Ryan Furlong as Communications Director

Incoming Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon has selected Ann Kaner-Roth to be his Deputy Secretary of State, noting her strong policy background and years of experience with non-profit, state, and county governments.

Kaner-Roth, a native Duluthian, has led a number of regional and state-wideorganizations in her career including Child Care WORKS and Project 515. Kaner-Roth received an undergraduate degree in Political Science and Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and a Masters in Social Work Policy from Boston University. Kaner-Roth has also received a number of awards, most recently being named “Woman of the Year” in 2014 by the Minnesota Women’s Consortium.

“Ann will hit the ground running and be a great advocate for all Minnesotans at the capitol,” Simon noted. “She’s a proven leader, and an advocate for fairness and equal treatment. I look forward to her continuing work on behalf of all Minnesotans.”

Simon has also selected Ryan Furlong to serve as his Communications Director. Furlong received his journalism degree from the Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism at the University of Southern California and has served in communication roles with statewide coalitions and elected officials, including Governor Mark Dayton’s office and most recently with Senator Franken’s re-election effort. Furlong’s work will encompass not only traditional communications efforts, but will also include oversight of the official website for the office, social media, and various outreach materials.

“Ryan has a track record of strong, strategic communications experience,” said Simon. “He’ll lead our effort to let Minnesotans know that the work of my office happens in their communities, not just in Saint Paul.”

Simon will be sworn in as Minnesota’s 22nd Secretary of State at noon on January 5th, 2015 at the Landmark Center in Saint Paul.
